Insects are a common concern for individuals of all ages, from the playful toddler venturing outdoors to the adventurous adult exploring nature. While no more than a mild annoyance for most people, some insects can produce severe allergic reactions in others. Life-threatening insect allergies most commonly occur in adults and are fortunately much more rare in small children.

Insect allergy causes are wide-ranging but usually result from an allergic reaction to the insect's venom or saliva. Mosquitoes, bees, wasps, hornets, yellowjackets, and spiders are among the most common insects that trigger allergic reactions. While biting insects like mosquitoes and spiders most commonly trigger localized pain, swelling, itching, and redness around the site of the injury, reactions to stinging insects like yellowjackets can be life-threatening.
Our team prioritizes a comprehensive and empathetic approach to insect allergy testing to ensure our patients receive the best care possible. Diagnosis of venom (stinging insect) allergies can include blood testing and/or skin testing (ADD LINK TO WHAT TO EXPECT PAGE).
Once diagnosed, the approach to treatment can vary based on the severity of the allergy and the individual needs of the patient. The mainstay of insect allergy treatment involves avoidance of triggers and educating the patient on recognizing the early symptoms of an allergic reaction. However, medications may also be prescribed to manage symptoms. An epinephrine autoinjector will be prescribed for life-threatening insect allergies, and education about the appropriate use and administration of your epinephrine device will be provided.
We understand that dealing with insect allergies can be distressing and sometimes frightening. Our team is committed to providing compassionate, comprehensive care, from accurate insect allergy testing to personalized insect bite reaction treatment. We strive to empower our patients with the knowledge and treatment options they need to live safely and comfortably.
When it comes to allergies, there are two main kinds of insects: biting and stinging. Testing for biting insects, such as mosquitoes, is not very accurate or readily available. If your allergy provider suspects reactions to biting insects, they will provide education on how to avoid bites and what can be done to treat your reaction symptoms.
However, if your provider determines that you would benefit from testing for stinging insect allergies, blood testing and/or skin testing may be done. Either of these methods can test individual insects such as honeybees, wasps, hornets, and yellowjackets, and the result should provide additional information on how sensitive you are to future stings. Given the multiple steps involved, skin testing can take up to three hours, so it may not be performed on the initial visit.
For milder allergic reactions, over-the-counter or prescribed antihistamines can effectively manage symptoms such as itching and swelling. In cases of more significant reactions, corticosteroids may be used to reduce inflammation.
All patients diagnosed with a venom (stinging insect) allergy will be prescribed an epinephrine autoinjector. Epinephrine is the only medication that can treat and reverse the signs and symptoms of a life-threatening allergic reaction. Our team will also educate patients and their caregivers on the appropriate use and administration of their epinephrine device.
Avoiding known triggers is the best way to prevent insect bites and allergic reactions. If you know you are allergic to a specific insect, take extra precautions when venturing outdoors. Wear protective clothing, use insect repellent, and be aware of your surroundings.
In addition to preventative measures, educating yourself and your loved ones on the signs and symptoms of insect allergies is essential. Early recognition and treatment can make all the difference in effectively managing an allergic reaction. Don't hesitate to seek medical help if you experience severe symptoms or suspect an insect bite allergy.
